Follohus saves time and money using LED stripes

Previously, Follohus used traditional work lamps and floodlights for general lighting on the construction site. Now 7 drums with LED strip have replaced all the work lights on their construction project in Radarveien in Oslo, Norway.

Roman Betisor works in BRV Prosjekt, one of Follohus subcontractors of carpentry services. He brought a LED strip drum to work and showed it to the Construction Manager in Follohus, Jon André Strøm, who was immediately excited.

Good working light is very important and I immediately recognized that these LED strips on a drum were a product we really needed. A drum with a 25 meter LED strip replaces five traditional working lamps and installation of the LED strips is faster, so we save a lot of time and can spend more time on building. A drum takes up so little space, and we save a lot of money on storage, handling and shipping.

Lower electricity bill using LED stripes

Follohus is a housing contractor who specializes in wooden houses in Eastern Norway. In the last 27 years, they have built more than 2,000 homes and one of the projects they are currently working on is Radarveien 87 in Oslo, Norway.

The groundwork on the site began in January 2021, with subsequent concrete work from Easter until over the summer holidays. Today, there are 16 - 20 workers on the construction site, who together work to build a total of 1700 sqm divided into seven homes, two semi-detached houses and one apartment building with three apartments. The homes will also have an underground car park. Now half the work is done and winter is soon on its way, which means an increased need for extra lighting. The challenge is that on a construction site there is often limited access to building electricity and heating up is often given priority over lighting.

«That is of course not fortunate, because good and adequate lighting will be able to reduce the risk of accidents and make us work better, faster and safer. One of the advantages of LED strips is that they provide really good light and in addition use little power. It is extra important in today's market with high electricity prices », says Jon André Strøm.

LED strips on drum make temporary lighting easy

The manufacturer behind the LED strips Follohus uses is Promitto. Promitto Group AS are specialists in linear LED lighting and work purposefully to develop the best and safest LED lighting solutions for the construction industry. They focus on new technology, high quality and innovative solutions and want to create value for customers through solutions that save time and environment.

"We save a lot of time by using LED stripes instead of traditional work lamps. Before, we quickly spent an hour a day getting the premises properly lit, because the work lights had to be moved around. We just roll out the LED strips and connect one socket. If we need more light, we just connect several LED strips and in a short time we have lit up the whole environment», says Roman Betisor.

Each drum has a 25 meter LED strip and the strips can easily connect more worklights from one outlet up to 150 meters of continous lighting. This makes LED strips the perfect choice for lighting corridors, stairwells, scaffolding, elevator shafts, tunnels and as area protection along fences or marking exits. The light is powerful enough to provide general lighting throughout buildings and can replace many of the traditional forms of lighting.

Good lighting contributes to a safe workplace

The Working Environment Act requires that there are good lighting conditions in the workplace and there are separate rules for lighting for the various areas on a construction site. In the past, the most commonly used light sources on the construction site have been steam lamps outdoors, while fluorescent lamps, compact fluorescent lamps and halogen have been most commonly used indoors. But in recent years, it has become more common with LED stripes for general lighting both outside and inside.

"I see clear advantages in using LED stripes for general lighting on the construction site. It couldn`t be easier! Good lighting in the workplace is so important and we have therefore included a separate item in our protection protocol which states that good lighting on our construction sites is required », says Jon André Strøm.

These LED strips are of very high quality and are the only LED strips on the market which, in addition to CE approval, are also Nemko-approved. The LED strips come with double padding and thicker conductors than competing LED strips, which makes them extra robust and safe to use. They also have no breakable parts or bulbs that need to be replaced and both the LED strip and the connection point have IP class 65. As an extra security, the connection point also has a screw connection, so that it is completely waterproof and dustproof.

«The LED strips are very flexible and can be used both indoors and outdoors. They also provide a very comfortable work light that does not dazzle us. It is practical that they are delivered on a drum, so when we are done here in Radarveien I can just spin up the strips, store them in a small space and then take them to the next project »
